Live Stream Date/Time: Thursday, October 15th, 2026 @ 9am Pacific.
Join OpenCV Live for a conversation with Dr. Andrew James Quitmeyer, founder of Digital Naturalism Laboratories (Dinalab), about the Mothbox, an open-source insect biodiversity monitoring system built to put automated field science within reach of researchers, conservationists, and hobbyists alike. The Mothbox is a low-cost, power-efficient device that field biologists can deploy deep in the jungle, and its affordability means many units can be spread across a landscape or a single one can study the biodiversity in your own backyard. Every physical design, electronics schematic, Raspberry Pi script, and identification model is released free and open source, with both a factory-assembled Pro version and a fully DIY build available. The stream will cover why insects, and moths in particular, serve as such a sensitive proxy for ecosystem health, how the computer vision pipeline was developed, and what it takes to scale an automated light trap into a landscape-wide monitoring network.
